THE LAYOVER | Ep. 2: The American Dream or the American Lie?

The season finale of the United States Is underway, so let’s have some real talk about the myths we were sold and the truths we’re finally facing.

The Layover is a behind-the-scenes series where I step from behind the mic to rap about the creative process as Black Expat Stories evolves from an ethnographic podcast into a global docuseries. It’s my opportunity to invite you into the journey — to witness the big wins, the tough lessons, and the crucial conversations fueling the Blaxit movement.

Spring has sprung and I’m thrilled about all the invites I’m getting to chop it up about the work I’m doing with Black Expat Stories.

I recently had a dope conversation with RJ Mood of Mood Travel Colombia, who curates relocation tours in Medellín.

We got connected through a mutual acquaintance, and he invited me on his podcast to explore a very real and very raw question:

Are we living in the midst of the American Dream or is it all just an American Lie?

And now that we’re in the thick of a Trump 2.0 administration, I know that question is sitting heavy on the minds of many.

In our convo, we talked about all the ways we realized we were lied to back in the U.S. — from education to global affairs — and how moving abroad has helped us become more conscious, more informed, more empowered global citizens.

What are your thoughts on the American Dream? Is it still a dream for you? Does it feel attainable? Is it a nightmare? A myth? A lie?

Drop your thoughts in the comments. I want to hear from you. Let’s keep this conversation going.
