The Layover is a behind-the-scenes series where I step from behind the mic to rap about the creative process as Black Expat Stories evolves from an ethnographic podcast into a global docuseries. It’s my opportunity to invite you into the journey — to witness the big wins, the tough lessons, and the crucial conversations fueling the Blaxit movement.
Rediscovering the Power of Gratitude
I was scrolling through comments on our Black Expat Stories YouTube channel recently and had one of those moments that made me pause and breathe in the goodness.
Now I gotta confess: responding to comments hasn’t always been my strength. Sometimes, I'm so busy pushing content out, that I overlook the magic happening right under my nose. But today, as I finally sat down to reply, two things hit me:
Every single comment was positive. In the internet streets, that's practically unheard of. I'm beyond grateful to have an audience whose warmth and appreciation consistently remind me why I started this journey.
There were more comments than I realized. What started as a quick check-in turned into a joyful deep-dive of gratitude. I genuinely couldn't stop replying.
This whole moment reminded me of a book I'm reading: The Magic by Rhonda Byrne, author of The Secret. It's basically a 28-day deep-dive into gratitude, reinforcing something I've always believed but sometimes forget: that gratitude can be fuel for one’s creative journey.
Reflecting on Progress
On this creative path of turning Black Expat Stories into a full-fledged documentary project, there have been more than enough hurdles to trip over. It’s incredibly easy to get caught up in everything that's lacking like resources, support, and opportunities.
But gratitude stepped in to remind me just how abundant I already am. Seeing comments from strangers (and a few familiar faces. Shoutout to my homies!) felt like getting a big hug from the universe.
It reminded me I'm not alone, I'm deeply supported, and progress is happening.
I remember the early days of Black Expat Stories when I felt like I was speaking into the void. Now, we’re inching toward monetizing our YouTube channel. In fact, we’re just under 100 subscribers shy of the 1,000-subscriber milestone. (Hint hint: if you're not subscribed yet, help a sista out and hit that subscribe button!)
Gratitude Can Be the Key To Your Next Level
If you're facing resistance or stagnation in your own life—no matter what the project is—I dare you to lean into gratitude. Count your blessings. Watch how it shifts your energy and reveals even more to be grateful for.
Because what you appreciate, appreciates.
Gratitude might just be the key you've been looking for to unlock your next level.
Let’s Keep the Convo Going
What’s one thing you’re feeling grateful for right now? It can be big or small. Actually, I don’t believe there is such a thing as anything small when we’re talking about gratitude, but you know what I mean.
I’d love to hear it. Drop a comment below and let’s create a ripple of appreciation together. Your words might be just the reminder someone else needs today.
